A backflow preventer is a device that prevents unwanted reversals of flow of water or other liquids that could cause harm to people, cause water to taste bad, or discolor drinking water. Backflow preventers, known to plumbing and irrigation professionals as backflow prevention assemblies, are required on all landscape irrigation systems and all automatic refill lines for swimming pools, fountains and garden ponds.
